A long awaited opportunity to take part in the Antiques Roadshow came about when it was scheduled to take place near my home (Bletchley Park – home of the WWII Code Breakers). My mother-in-law was to accompany me bringing a highchair that had been in her family for many years.
 

 

 

I informed the AR of our family treasure. One week before and following a telephone call from the office, Paul Atterbury knocked on my door with a colleague – the experience had begun. Their interest in the highchair helped to confirm that myself, mum and my friend June would definitely attend!
 
On a sunny 12th July we arrived as promised and were greeted by Elaine Binning, Mum confirmed the highchair’s history and agreed to be filmed. She was prepared with the pre-camera makeup alongside Fiona Bruce who was undergoing the same experience.
 
When filming began Elaine confirmed that the highchair doesn’t have a great deal of monetary value. However, having been used extensively by children in mum and dad’s family for approximately four generations (about 100 years), its provenance is water-tight.
 
 
Filming complete, we headed off to see more of the experts. Eric Knowles (truly a wickedly humorous expert) confirmed June’s bowl is Meissen and worth four times more than she paid for it. Elaine Binning was also very excited by a collection of early 19th century family heirlooms that I’d taken with me on behalf of another friend of mine.
 

This long awaited opportunity was made even more pleasurable by the friendliness, enthusiasm and knowledge shown by the experts, making the whole day an experience to treasure!
