It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks as I’ve been immersed in the launch of a brand new event that will be in everyone’s diary for next year –
Vintage at Goodwood 2010 (13 – 15 August). Hot foot from filming the Ironbridge Roadshow (where I saw some truly amazing Mary Quant originals), I headed south for Goodwood where I stayed for three days to unveil a run of vintage fashion catwalk shows, giving a taster of what’s to come. I’ve been working with the brilliant Wayne Hemmingway and Lord March on a complete celebration of British design, fashion, music and generally everything `cool’ from the 1940s through to the 1980s. Next August, vintage streets will be built; you can have your hair styled and buy clothes from your favourite era, listen to the bands, Lindy Hop on the dance floor, revive your stitching skills and learn all about style and design through the decades.

Everything at Goodwood attracts personalities but the last person I expected to bump in to was Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Those Frank Sinatra lyrics, “Fly me to the Moon” came to mind but instead of bursting into song I said a polite “Delighted to meet you.” We had Peter Mandelson on our Vintage dancefloor – now he’s a man who can move his feet, and actor Rowan Atkinson took my seat in the hairdressers – nice cut Mr Bean!

In keeping with the theme, I spent my weekend at Goodwood dressed in late 1960s creations. It was a joy to wear originals from Mansfield and Mark Russell. To complete the look I just had to have a real 1960s beehive and the girls from
Nina’s Hairdressing (our hair parlour at Goodwood) gave my hair a real make-over. Twenty minutes of backcombing and lashings of hairsprayresulted in a look I’ll never forget! The lovely Lisa George (make up lady to the stars) carefully positioned my first ever pair of false eyelashes – long, lean and luxurious – and dare I say it – annoyingly heavy! With that I was done and popped off to present my fashion shows with the look of a real Chelsea girl.
Naomi at
Vintage Secret was hugely helpful with the loan of key vintage fashion pieces as were the girls at the
National Film Theatre (they have a costume collection to die for, and it’s all for hire – now that’s a tip for your next party!) The lovely Fleur de Guerre was my perfect retro model and she posed on the catwalk and dance floor with lashings of vintage style.
What more can I say but... roll on Vintage at Goodwood for next year – I think you can guess... I can’t wait!
